Liberated canvases
This series of works on canvas resulted from a trip to the South Coast of NSW soon after the horrific bush fires in 2019.

Carol wrapped canvas around burnt tree trunks and rubbed until the charcoal adhered to the canvas. She then added acrylic washes and oil paints to create works so that the original charcoal from the burnt trees is still visible.

This then led Carol to experiment with finding a way to show the ridges and crevices in the burnt trunks. Finally, she found a method of creating and preserving a three dimensional effect that remains in the canvas.
‘It felt like I was liberating the canvas from the constraints of the stretcher. I then thought, why have a stretcher at all? Some works hang from a top brace and others are held in place on mat board.’
The paintings in this Liberated Canvas Series are all three dimensional. The ridges and valleys are set in strong adhesive and stay in place. Early Morning Mist has raised mountains and recessed valleys. Melting Harbinger and Fire Line reveal the original charcoal and evoke the dry landscape and the bushfires.
Carol continues to explore with the three dimensional technique. So far the others in the series are Four Sharks, Green Gold and Four Paddlers. There are more in the pipe line!
